Oscars 101

Once a month, on a Friday to be exact, we are all blessed with a wonderful gift referred to as Open Mic Night. “What is Open Mic Night?” some unaware Grace student may ask. Open Mic Night takes place in the Westy basement in what used to be the Westy Grill, and is as titled: a night to come and play fun games, share a variety of coffee, and enjoy a multitude of students sharing different talents. The Game Room staff of four, including Hannah Brown, John Mackin, Felicia Schmitz, and Lindsay Devereaux, work extremely hard each month to put on this event so that students on and off campus can come together. They try to make sure that posters are put up at least one week before each Open Mic Night. The posters include the time for the event, which is 7:30 to 10:30 p.m., although Open Mic usually lasts longer. Generally, there are anywhere between 100 and 200 students at each Open Mic Night; however, the Game Room staff would love to get everyone on campus involved.

Schmitz and Devereaux gladly share how Open Mic Night began, and what their favorite parts are. Lindsay said that Open Mic Night was “something [the staff] had thought about doing for a while” and “thought it was a good idea since they started doing events.” Some of their favorite parts of Open Mic Night include “working the coffee bar, hearing everyone’s talent, and the board games,” although they wanted to stress that “everyone is welcome: comedians, poets, musicians,” as well as anyone with somewhat weird talents. Also, “you don’t have to [participate]; just come and get coffee.”

The Game Room staff is going to incorporate more events each weekend, but Devereaux and Schmitz are unable to specify what those events will entail.
