Women’s Tennis Team Heads to the Dominican Republic

Got any big plans for spring break? Well, the Grace College Women’s Tennis team certainly does! On Feb. 27, six girls from the team will be going on an eight-day mission trip to the Dominican Republic through Score International.

The girls have been preparing for weeks, and for some of them, like sophomore Katie Etter, it will be their first trip overseas. Others, like sophomore Gabrielle Lawrence, have been out of the country before.

Lawrence fondly recalls a trip to the Dominican Republic during her senior year of high school: “The trip changed my life. I cannot wait to revisit this place.”

The team meets each Tuesday to pray for the safety, funding, and purpose of their trip.

“We ask God to prepare our hearts, to raise the necessary funds, and for the Spirit to speak through us when we’re there,” said senior Sarah Hinkel, Grace College tennis veteran of three years. “I also have a Spanish word of the day app to become more familiar with the language of the Dominican Republic,” she said.

Additionally, the girls are reading a book in preparation for their trip.

The team is excited to share the love of Jesus with the people they encounter in the Dominican Republic through different outreaches, such as visiting orphanages and running tennis clinics. Through their godly sportsmanship and attitudes, they hope to be good witnesses of Christ’s love.

“We hope to talk to the people we meet down there and tell them about Jesus. I think that the light of Jesus will shine through us being flexible, adaptable, and willing to do whatever is asked of us,” said freshman Caroline Cassidy.

The language barrier is something that Cassidy feels will push her out of her comfort zone; however, she is pursuing a Spanish minor, so she looks forward to the opportunity to practice the language.

There are several ways you can support the team as they prepare to take the love of Jesus and the joys of tennis to the Dominican Republic.

First, they are selling coupon booklets through Carson’s that cost just $5 and include both a $10-off and 30%-off coupon. If you are interested in purchasing a booklet, simply talk to one of the girls on the team in person or via email or Facebook.

Additionally, Sarah Hinkel has made hats that she is selling for $10 each; to purchase one, please contact her at or talk to her in person. And, of course, the most important way you can help support the team is through praying for the team and their trip.
