Women’s Tennis Prepares for New 2012-13 Season

The Lady Lancer tennis team has seen a lot of change this year.

With only four returning upperclassmen, the 2012-2013 Lancers face a rebuilding season, gaining a new coach and seven freshman recruits.

The Lady Lancers have some very strong new additions to the team, including Taryn Wuensch, a freshman playing number one doubles with Kristin Cassidy (a sophomore) as well as number two singles. Also leading the team are upperclassmen Nicole Beguin (senior), Janelle Hess (junior), and Esther Smith (junior).

“Taryn has had the most experience of all the new recruits because she played three years of number one singles at Huntington. She brings a lot of competition to the team,” said new coach Joe Beeson. Beeson, who formerly owned the Warsaw Racquet Club, is very optimistic for the upcoming season.

“Even though the new recruits are inexperienced as far as college tennis, the team’s attentiveness and willingness to listen and do what is asked of them is different than anything I have seen in the past,” he said. “That is going to pay off in the long run.”

This season, the team is looking to improve in consistency and knowledge of strategy in both singles and doubles.

Last weekend, the team traveled to Indiana Wesleyan University and played very well. The Lady Lancers did not win, but they enjoyed the time spent improving and bonding as a team. “We played a lot better compared to last week, even though it may not have shown in the scores,” Summer Niverson, a freshman on the team, said. “There is a lot more improvement to come.”

When Coach Beeson was asked what he liked most about coaching the team, his answer came across as simple and touching. “I just like coaching the team. I am very pleased about coaching this exceptional group.”
