Michael Humphrey, Tennis

Michael is this week’s Player of the Week with his performances in the matches against Huntington and St. Francis. In the first match, Humphrey helped the Lancers clinch a share of the regular season title with a two great singles matches (6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-2) and two impressive doubles matches (8-1 and 8-4). The regular season share of the title is the first title for Grace since 1989. Humphrey and the Grace Tennis team take on Taylor on Tuesday in a first round tournament matchup.

 

 

 

Men’s soccer dominates Goshen in lopsided match

Winona Lake– Coming off a strange 1-1 tie against IWU with the main player being fog, Grace men’s soccer welcomed Goshen to Miller Field on Saturday afternoon in which no fog was present. The Maple Leafs (6-4-1, 1-1-1 CL) were outmatched from the very beginning as Grace flexed their muscles with a dominating 3-0 victory over Goshen. The first goal was scored in the 12th minute of play with Gift Sibukome drilling the shot into the net. Shane Barthuly added a goal with less than 90 seconds left to play in the first half to put Grace up 2-0 at half. After 10 minutes of play in the second half, sophomore Nikola Blazic concluded the scoring from Grace with a header into the net. For the game, the Lancers outshot the Maple Leafs 24-6 with Trent Smith and Nikola Blazic each recording 5 shots. Collin Cone recorded two saves in 90 minutes leading Grace to its sixth shutout in 10 games. The Lancers (7-2-1, 2-0-1 CL) look to continue their success in Indianapolis against Marian on Tuesday.

Grace men’s tennis wins its first league title in 23 years

First up on the week was Huntington on Tuesday. The Foresters (3-6, 3-4 CL) were outplayed by Grace men’s tennis team as the Lancers rolled to a 6-3 victory over Huntington. Led by Michael Humphrey (6-0, 6-0) and Jack Wang (6-1, 6-1) in singles and doubles (8-1), the Lancers proved that they are a team to contend with. Michael Blevins (6-7, 6-4, 6-1) and Nikola Todorovic (6-4, 1-6, 6-2) sealed the win with hard-fought victories in singles and doubles (8-3). This victory put Grace into a tie for first place as they welcomed St. Francis to Miller Field on Saturday. St. Francis was absolutely dominated by Grace as they romped to a sweep and the first league title in 23 years. Daniel Sanchez (6-0, 6-0), Michael Blevins (6-1, 6-1), Aaron Blevins (6-1, 6-0), Michael Humphrey (6-0, 6-2), Jack Wang (6-1, 6-0) and Josh Beguin (6-2, 6-2) all easily won their singles matches. In doubles, M.Blevins/Todorovic (8-1), A.Blevins/Sanchez (8-0), and Humphrey/Wang (8-4) sealed a share of the title with resounding victories. The Lancers (7-2, 7-1 CL) look to continue their success in the first round of the Crossroads League Tournament as the second seed. They will play seventh-seeded Taylor on Tuesday.
