Grace Graduates: Why They Came and Never Left

By Hannah DeGaetano

It’s fairly common to hear of Grace grads staying in the Warsaw or Winona Lake area after graduating; however, the reasoning behind it is often unknown. In order to uncover some answers to this puzzling question, I sat down with three Grace grads and asked them to share their stories.

John Leopold (Graduated 2008)

Why did you choose Grace?

I wanted a school with a Christian understanding since it was not present in my family life. I really liked the math and youth ministry programs that Grace offered.

What field of study drew you to Grace?

I came to Grace as a math major because I liked math and was good at it. The math program later changed to a statistics program, and I went along with it.

What caused you to stay in the area after obtaining your degree?

After graduating from Grace, I went away for grad school in Bowling Green, Ohio. While there, I had an internship and was hoping I would be offered a job; to my disappointment, the job offer never came. However, God was leading me; He was working it all out. As it turns out, one of my professors worked at DePuy and put in a good word for me. Shortly thereafter, I was offered a job at DePuy and accepted.

How long have you stayed in the area?

Since moving back from Bowling Green, Ohio, I have been in the area for six-and-a-half years.

Did you ever want to move back home?

With the uncertainty surrounding my job, there are times when I want to move closer to family.

Do you like your decision to stay in the area after all these years?
