Communitas forum begins next month

You’ve read the posters. You’ve heard the news. You’ve wondered just what your professors are talking about when they encourage you to submit work to this nebulous, Latin-named thing. If you’ve become aware of Communitas in any way, it’s probably only raised more questions.

What is Communitas?” you say. I’m here to tell you that Communitas is Grace College’s best kept secret, an event that gets right to the heart of everything we do and everything we are.

Here’s why:

Communitas is worship. When you read the word worship, your mind probably envisions something a lot like your Sunday morning church service or a chapel hour – singing, praying, and listening to a speaker. While participating in church and chapel is an act of worship, God also calls us to love him with all of our minds. In sponsoring Communitas on the same day as Day of Worship, Grace’s Office of Faith, Learning & Scholarship hopes to remind us that when we pursue scholarship with excellence and learning with joy, our work honors God as much as the loudest worship song.

Communitas is scholarship. Conceived as a public forum for the sharing of ideas, Communitas gives students the opportunity to present their scholarly and creative work in an environment that celebrates that work. At last year’s event, about three dozen Grace students were able to share their scholarship with about 150 members of the Grace community, welcoming them into a shared learning experience. Communitas is a chance to share our passions with the world, as well as a model for the presentation opportunities that we’ll all have in the future, whatever our field of study.

Which brings me to my last point, Communitas is fellowship. Too often in college we surround ourselves with people who are like us, forgetting that we all need each other. As students in the liberal arts tradition, we here at Grace have a unique opportunity to learn from people in every field, with interests ranging from environmental biology to religious history. Communitas welcomes students from all majors and from each of Grace College’s schools, bringing diverse voices together as one like few other days do.

So what are you waiting for? Communitas will take place on Tuesday, March 27, after Spring Day of Worship. Applications for presentations will be available at the Communitas section on the Campus Life page of the Portal until February 14. Still have questions? Email Dr. Jared Burkholder, Dr. Paulette Sauders, Dr. Nate Bosch, Prof. J.D. Woods, or Connor Park for more information.

Be a part of Grace’s best kept secret. Be a part of Communitas.
